AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho has hit out at English referee Anthony Taylor, saying the UEFA Europa League final was a vibrant game with a referee who seemed Spanish. Sevilla beat AS Roma on penalties to win the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League title.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Mourinho said the final was an intense and vibrant affair with a referee who seemed Spanish. Mourinho was defeated for the first time in a European final in a match that saw British referee Taylor give out 14 yellow cards, the most ever in a Europa League game.
“It was an intense, vibrant game with a referee who seemed Spanish. It was yellow, yellow, yellow all the time,” said Mourinho.
Speaking at the press conference, the Portuguese coach said this kind of referring is hard to accept in a European final. Sevilla beat Roma 4-1 on penalties to win their record-extending seventh UEFA Europa League title.
“This is a European final and with this kind of refereeing, it is hard to accept. If we talk about refereeing situations, it’s not two or three: it is many, quite apart from the big decisions. Those of us who have been in football a long time realise immediately what is going on,” Mourinho added.
He went on to called Taylor’s referring a scandal, saying he booked Roma players and spared the Sevilla players for the same action in the final. Mourinho was also seen shouting at the English official in the car park after the match and calling him “a disgrace.”
“Pellegrini falls in box and given a yellow card, Ocampos did exactly the same thing and he doesn’t get one. It’s a scandal. VAR called the referee and shames Ocampos but there’s no card given,” said Mourinho.
AS Roma finished sixth in Serie A and will be playing in the UEFA Europa League again next season. Had they won the final, AS Roma would gain direct entry to next season’s UEFA Champions League
